Sherwood Park defenceman Healey nominated for AJHL award

Posted February 24th, 2013 @ 12:00 am

On Friday, Feb. 15 the Alberta Junior Hockey League, in partnership with The RBC Play Hockey Project, released their finalists for the 2013 league awards.

This year has very little Crusader content, with a few glaring exclusions.

Josh Healy is nominated for the W.G. (Bill) Scott Memorial Trophy for outstanding defenceman. Healy is leading all Cru D with 22 points and tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals. A former stay-at-home defender, Healy has stepped up his game at the behest of the Cru coaching staff. He has since gained more confidence and earned a silver medal in the World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, N.S.

The first omission is in the Top Goaltender category and Crusaders head coach Tim Fragle agrees.

“I’m not sure why Matt Tomkins didn’t get nominated,” Fragle said. “If you look at his numbers, he doing fairly well. He is up near the top of most of the stats.”

With a minimum of 30 games played, Tomkins sits tied for third in wins with 21, tied for second in shutouts with 4, fifth in goals against average with 2.51 and third in save percentage 0.925, 0.001 back of tied for second.

As well, Fragle was left off the Coach of the Year list, even though his team playing most of the year with a patchwork line-up due to injuries and suspensions but is still vying for home ice during the playoffs.

According to the AJHL press release, two finalists from each division were selected by the league’s general managers and coaches through the first phase of voting. The award winners for each of the categories listed below will be determined through a final vote by the AJHL general managers and coaches over the final two weeks of the regular season. The winners of the awards will be announced at the end of the season.
