Flashback Friday: Nicholas Jones
Posted August 4th, 2017 @ 9:17 am

Nicholas Jones is an Edmonton native who played for the Crusaders for two seasons. Prior to his time in the AJHL, Jones played his minor hockey for the Knights of Columbus until 2012. During that time, he was selected to played in the Alberta Cup for Team Edmonton North and the Western Canada Challenge Cup (WCCC) for Team Alberta, where he played alongside now NHLer Brayden Point (Tampa Bay Lightning) and John Quenneville (New Jersey Devil). Both Jones and Team Alberta won the gold medal that year.

At a young age Jones had already experienced so much and his junior hockey career had not even begun yet.

In 2012, Jones chose to play for the Sherwood Park Crusaders. The roster was already filled with top talent all over the ice with Danny Smith and Andrew Taverner up front, Josh Healey commanding the back end and Matt Tomkins between the pipes. Jones fit right into the team playing in 48 games in his rookie season. Over those 48 games he scored 11 goals along with 13 assists. The 16-year old scored his first Crusaders goal just seven games into the season against the Drayton Valley Thunder.

The following season saw Jones really come out his shell. Jones took control of the offense and ran with it scoring 72 points in only 52 games. Jones ended up leading the league in goals with 41 and finished third in points, only three points behind first place. His performances that season did not go unnoticed and was selected to be part of the all-star team.

That same year, Jones was chosen to play for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Jones played alongside his Crusaders teammate Andrew Taverner and against now NHLers like Nick Schmaltz (Chicago Blackhawks) and Kyle Connor (Winnipeg Jets). The Crusaders forward had himself a successful tournament finishing ninth in scoring with five points. Himself and Team Canada West also walked away with the bronze medal.

After his second season with the Crusaders Jones was recruited by Ohio State University. He did not stick around for very long, only making 29 appearances before moving onto the Penticton Vees.

Jones called Penticton home until the end of this most recent season. He endured a successful stint with the Vees playing in 100 games, scoring 125 points. The former Crusader became a BCHL champion and took a trip to the RBC Cup but ended up falling short of another championship.

Next season, Jones will take another stab at the NCAA but this time with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.

We wish you the best of luck at North Dakota Nicholas and hope to see you have all the success possible!
