Cru defeat Saints in shootout

The Sherwood Park Arena crowd was treated with a tremendous hockey game last night between the hometown Crusaders and crosstown rivals, the Spruce Grove Saints.

The travelling Saints got on the board first with 55 seconds left on a powerplay midway through the first. Cody Babichuk beat Matt Berlin, who was screened, from the point with a wrist shot making it 1-0 Saints. Then, with just over two minutes to play in the period, Carter Savoie held onto the puck just long enough to find William Zapernick who tied up the game with his 12th of the season.

Now into the second, it was an evenly matched contest with only one goal being scored. Michael Benning beat Matthew Davis on the powerplay. Benning held onto the puck long enough to find his spot and beat Davis to give the Crusaders their first lead of the game. The Saints would respond in the third period from Bruce MacGregor.

The game was sent into overtime, but nothing was resolved with the extra frame which mean’t we were going to a shootout.

The shootout went down to the final shootout with Carter Savoie, Garrett Clegg, and Cody Babichuk all scoring for their teams. The last shooter was Cam Mitchell for the Saints, but he couldn’t get it by Berlin giving the Crusaders a 3-2 shootout win.
