SHERWOOD PARK, AB – It was a difficult way to end a regular season that had many positives on Saturday night as the Sherwood Park Crusaders fell 8-0 to the Spruce Grove Saints on home ice.
The Saints completed the season series sweep in convincing fashion as six of their eight goals came on the power play as Saturday was a battle of the league’s top two power plays with Spruce Grove showing why they have the best conversion rate over Sherwood Park.
Much like Friday night in Spruce Grove, the Crusaders allowed the Saints to open the scoring early and fell behind a pair of goals late in the first period.
Spruce Grove completely took over the game with a pair of goals 16 seconds apart, first at 7:26 on a two-man advantage with Chase Olsen scoring and then at 7:42 Nick Leyer would make it 4-0.
Sherwood Park native Jordan Biro would score late in the second period for the first of two goals for him to give the Saints a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third period, history was made for the Saints as Captain Josh Harris scored a pair of goals putting him as the all-time leader in goals for the Saints in their time in Spruce Grove. Harris finishes with 73 career goals as Spruce Grove Saint.
Jordan Biro would cap off the scoring with his second of the game as the Saints picked up their 47th win of the season and outshoot the Crusaders 50-20.
With the loss the Crusaders finish the season 27-31-2 with 56 points and finish in fifth place in the Viterra North Division for the fourth consecutive year.
Sherwood Park will face the Grande Prairie Storm in the best of five division quarter final of the 2018 Inter Pipeline Playoffs starting Wednesday in Grande Prairie for game one and Thursday for game two. Game’s three and four (if necessary) would be Saturday March 10th and Sunday March 11th.
The schedule for the series has yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned on the Crusaders social media accounts for up to the minute confirmations on the start and dates of the series.
