Crusaders CURRsed by Oil Barons

SHERWOOD PARK, AB – 33 saves from Fort McMurray Goaltender Chris Curr and timely scoring for the Oil Barons propelled one of the top teams in the VIterra north division to a 5-1 victory over the Sherwood Park Crusaders Sunday afternoon at the Sherwood Park Arena.

The Crusaders would open the scoring exactly ten minutes into the hockey game when William Zapernick scored his 11th of the season on a breakaway caused by an Oil Baron turnover at the Crusader blue line.

Fort McMurray would answer back 38 seconds later as Trevor Schroder redirected a Curtis Roach point shot past Sherwood Park Goaltender Brandon Vogel.

It was all Oil Barons after that, scoring twice more in the period to go up 3-1 after the first period.

The game turned for the worse in the second period when the Crusaders allowed a short handed goal against 3:37 into the middle frame.

Connor Lyons would give the Oil Barons their fifth goal at 12:24 of the second, spelling the end for Brandon Vogel.

Affiliate Goaltender Ben Rishaug would relieve Vogel after five goals on 16 shots.

Rishaug stopped all 11 pucks he faced.

The Crusaders went zero for five on the power play while Fort McMurray failed to score on one opportunity.

With the win the Oil Barons clinch the season series as they now lead 4-1 throught the first five of six meeting between the Crusaders this season.

Sherwood Park falls to 18-19-2 on the season, remaining in fifth place in the Viterra north division, they will host the Calgary Mustangs and Canmore Eagles next Friday and Saturday.
