Crusaders fight for win over Thunder

Drayton Valley, AB: The Sherwood Park Crusaders scored three times in the final period for a 5-2 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder, despite giving up a 2-0 lead.

Will Zapernick (University of Alabama – Huntsville) opened the scoring on an early power play goal after 57 seconds, with University of Denver commits Carter Savoie and Michael Benning assisting. Benning then scored at the end of the first period to double the lead.

Penalties became an issue in the second period, and it cost the Cru the lead. Matthew Kinash and Kadyn Chabot pulled the game back to even score. Forward Jarred White (University of Alabama – Huntsville) had a rough period, having been sent to the box three times.

Zapernick grabbed his second of the game in the third period to give his side a narrow 3-2 lead. The Crusaders needed to make the game more comfortable, and they strengthened the lead thanks to Ty Ettinger?s goal. Bryce Bader finished the night off with an empty netter, and Sherwood Park left the ice as 5-2 winners.

The final game of the season takes place Thursday night, where the Cru will travel to Whitecourt to take on the Wolverines.
