The Sherwood Park Crusaders couldn’t muster the beast to take down the Wolverines.
The local squad’s lone game on the weekend was against the Whitecourt Wolverines (8-3-2) on Friday.
It was a game that left some expectations up in the air, as it is Whitecourt’s first year in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, having relocated from St. Albert. It would seem, however, that they found their stride quite early on, defeating the Crusaders 8-2.
The start of the first period saw strong starting points for the Cru (8-5-0), with an immediate unassisted goal by Adam Maghrabi. Although that was quickly responded to with a Whitecourt goal. Only 10 seconds later, however, the Cru came back with an Arthur Gordon goal to pull ahead 2-1 less than halfway through the first period. That was about as close as the Crusaders would get to victory.
Two more Wolverine goals in the first, three in the second and two in the third spelled demise for the Cru, who were outshot 43-23 on the night.
