Sherwood Park, AB: Led by 23 saves from Carter Gylander (Colgate University), the Sherwood Park Crusaders extended their win streak to eight with a 4-1 victory over the Whitecourt Wolverines. With the win, Sherwood Park remains undefeated on home ice.
After a scoreless first period, the Crusaders finally got on the board midway through the second period. Brett Wieschorster (University of Vermont) fired the puck on goal which was partially stopped by the Wolverines netminder Vincent Duplessis; however, the shot dropped behind the Whitecourt shot-stopper giving Davis Murray an open net to knock in his first goal of the season.
The Wolverines equalized six minutes later from Eric Perneel, but that goal was soon cancelled out after Blake Sydlowski set up Wieschorster for a one time blast for his first goal since opening night.
It didn?t take long for Sherwood Park to add to their lead in the third period. Jarred White?s shot rebounded into the slot to Ty Mueller (University of Nebraska-Omaha) who extended the home team?s lead to two. Mueller has now scored 10 points in his last six games and is the highest scored 16-year old in the AJHL.
Late in the third period, the victory was sealed when Will Zapernick (University of Alabama-Huntsville) beat Duplessis to make it 4-1 to Sherwood Park and move them to 16-1-0 on the season.
Next up, the Crusaders take on the Grande Prairie Storm at the Sherwood Park Arena on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. This will be the team?s Halloween Game which means all kids 14 years or under can enter the game for free if they?re dressed in costume. Tickets are available here.
