Sherwood Park, AB: The Sherwood Park Crusaders continued on their hot streak Tuesday night with a 5-1 win on the road against the Whitecourt Wolverines.
It didn’t take long for the Crusaders to get on the scoresheet. A point shot from Michael Benning (University of Denver) was tipped by Vincent Duplessis in the Wolverines goal by Will Zapernick (University of Alabama-Huntsville) 59 seconds into the game. Shortly after, Ty Mueller (University of Nebraska-Omaha) was sent to the penalty box for an ineligible player penalty. The Wolverines did capitalize on their odd man advantage when Adam Sandstrom shot through a crowd beating Carter Gylander (Colgate University) to tie the game up at 1-1. However, Sherwood Park did go into the first intermission with the lead. On the powerplay, Carter Savoie (University of Denver) set up Benning for a one timer blast which flew by Duplessis to restore the Crusaders lead.
In the second period, Sherwood Park continued to pile the pressure on Whitecourt, putting 17 shots on goal. They got on the board again when Bryce Bader bounced the puck off the Wolverines netminder from behind the net to extend the lead to two.
The Crusaders closed out the contest in the third period with a pair of goal. Savoie made it 4-1 at the eight minute mark with a wrist shot from the slot for his league leading 22nd goal of the year. Then, right after the midway point of the third, Blake Sydlowski gathered up the loose puck in the grease and slotted it for his second goal of the season. Between the pipes, Gylander put together another strong performance making 19 saves for his 10th straight win of the season.
Next up, the Crusaders head home for a pair of t against the Wolverines on Friday night and then on Sunday afternoon versus the Grande Prairie Storm. Sunday’s game will be the teams Halloween Game so all kids 14 or under wearing a costume can enter the game for free. Tickets are available here.
