Pontiacs run away from Cru

The Cru were unable to overcome an early deficit in a 6-2 loss to Bonneyville on Wednesday.

“For 20 minutes we took the play to them and then they get a fluky goal,” head coach Tim Fragle said.

“We outshot them, 18 to five was our count in the first, and we are down 1-0. Then there was 14 minutes in the second period where we were mentally soft. We let a team that we had dominated for the first period, once they got a goal. We let them take over with the momentum.”

It was a very quick turn as the first two goals in the second were only 24 seconds apart. This isn’t anything new for coach Fragle.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really happy with anything from last night,” he said. “We have seen that story too often, especially on home ice where we’ve just floundered. We are below .500 at home on the season, and I would say, of our nine losses at home, seven of them were exactly like Wednesday where we have a great first period, don’t capitalize on our chances, the other team gets one or two quick goals, and that is how we end up losing the game.”

Post game, Fragle let the team know how he thought about their current play.

“The message to the players after the game was I’m tired,” he said. “I’m tired of seeing the same show on home ice.”

Some bright notes on an otherwise forgettable night were rookie forward Sean MacTavish’s power play goal from Josh Healey and Danny Smith. The other Cru goal came late in the game as Fraser Bulbuc took a feed from Nick Charif with less than three minutes to go in the game.

MacTavish’s goal was his 10th of the season and garnered him the home star of the game honours. The goal from Bulbuc was his second of the season.

Up next for the Crusaders are the division-leading Spruce Grove Saints. The game, the second of a three-game homestand, will hopefully get the Cru back on track after beating the Grand Prairie Storm 3-0 on Saturday.

This recent setback puts Sherwood Park at 16-14-4 for 36 points and second-to-last in the Alberta Junior Hockey League North Division.
